Mental health services are psychological and psychiatric treatment and counseling services for individuals with a diagnosed mental illness. They are conducted in a group or individual setting, and provided by a mental health professional licensed or authorized within the State to render such services. Such professionals typically include psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers.
Nearly half of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients are aged 50 years and older. As with the overall RWHAP population, the majority of older Ryan White clients are from racial and ethnic minority populations and have lower incomes. Their viral suppression rates, across key populations, are slightly above the overall RWHAP rate, with the exception of those with unstable housing. Care for older people can be challenging if they are being treated for multiple conditions as they may need support to manage (and pay for) complicated treatment regimens.
Approximately one-fourth of HRSA Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients are Hispanic/Latino. Viral suppression rates are slightly above the overall RWHAP average, and overall these clients are younger than average. Technical assistance and training resources focus on, for example, linguistic, cultural, and other barriers to health care.
The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) fills gaps in care for individuals living with HIV disease. Over half of the 1+ million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. get some type of care from the RWHAP. The majority of RWHAP clients are low income individuals from racial/ethnic minority populations. Technical assistance and training resources assist RWHAP agencies in delivering care to the overall RWHAP population as well as to specific populations. Examples include care protocols, cultural competency resources, and patient education materials.
MSM comprise the majority of HIV/AIDS cases in the U.S., representing over half of those infected with HIV/AIDS. In 2022, among MSM getting medical care from the RWHAP, 90.2% achieved viral suppression. These rates varied across MSM populations, particularly MSM with unstable housing and younger MSM.
Rural areas often face limited health care services and require travel across long distances to access care, with limited transportation options. Options for HIV care are often limited, with added barriers to care including stigma, which can serve as a deterrent from individuals seeking out testing and treatment.
One-fourth of Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) clients are female. Minority women, particularly African Americans, are the most heavily impacted. Many women living with HIV disease face socioeconomic and other barriers, like intimate partner violence and responsibility for child and family care. Women who receive care from the RWHAP are far more likely to be retained in care and have viral suppression than those not receiving RWHAP services.
