A California clinic has been named HIV Primary Care Health Center of the Month. Clinicas De Salud Del Pueblo--located near the California-Mexico border, east of San Diego in Brawley, California--was recognized for its work in HIV/AIDS care. The clinic is one of 54 sites participating in AETC NCHCMC training and is training 12 of their providers in HIV care. Most of the training sites are not currently funded by Ryan White. Clinicas De Salud Del Pueblo serves around 50,000 people each year and provides HIV care for over 150 HIV-positive clients.

The recognition was accorded by the AETC National Center for HIV Care in Minority Communities (AETC NCHCMC), a HRSA-funded cooperative agreement. The Center is providing TA and training to expand HIV/AIDS primary care services in HRSA-funded Health Centers in order to better serve communities of color, who are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. (Note: NCHCMC is no longer active.)

Health Centers and HIV

HRSA's Health Centers program started over 45 years ago to deliver primary health care to patients regardless of their ability to pay. In 2011, 1,128 Health Centers delivered care to around 20.2 million patients across the U.S. and its Territories. HIV/AIDS is a smaller but growing part of the care provided by Health Centers. In 2009, Health Centers conducted HIV testing with 700,000+ people and provided HIV/AIDS care to nearly 95,000 clients--or around 9% of Americans with HIV. A significant proportion of Ryan White Part C community clinics are Health Centers.

Health Centers have been expanding their overall primary care services for over a decade under additional Federal funding, most recently under the Affordable Care Act. HRSA is also working with Health Centers to expand their capacity to deliver HIV/AIDS care as part of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (see the 2011 Program Assistance Letter 2011-06, HIV/AIDS Care & Treatment in Health Centers).
