In It Together Health Literacy Project

The In It Together Health Literacy Project was a training initiative designed to help health professionals incorporate health literacy approaches and strategies into the services they provide, with the goal of improving engagement and retention in HIV care and treatment.

In It Together trained community members from communities highly affected by HIV to become health literacy trainers. Community members participated in an online health literacy training-of-trainers. Then, the In It Together trainers provide in-person training to individual health professionals and health care organizations that serve people with HIV.

There were two In It Together training initiatives:

Improving Health Literacy for All

Designed for health professionals serving a diverse spectrum of people with HIV.

Improving Health Literacy for Black MSM

Designed for health professionals serving Black/African American men who have sex with men (MSM).

TA and Training Services

Through this project, 100 trainers from 34 communities provided tailored health literacy training to local health professionals and organizations. Trainings were designed to help health professionals apply health literate approaches and provide health literate services that help clients living with HIV obtain, process, and understand health information and services. Print materials were also available. The project’s print materials are designed to initiate health literate conversations between and among health professionals and people with HIV.

JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI) implemented this project under contract #U69HA30143 with the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
