Watch this brief summary of what we currently know about same day initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for an individual who comes into a clinic and learns about their HIV diagnosis for the first time. The Same Day ART Start
video, by the Mountain West AETC, reviews the high rate of loss to follow-up from initial HIV test to starting ART as a potential reason to embrace same-day ART and summarizes international studies on the efficacy of same-day ART start. The video also recaps current U.S. HIV treatment guidelines. which observe that same day start remains investigational, that data on its efficacy in the U.S. are not yet available, and that the approach is resource-intensive in terms of the need for clinical staff to be on-call and immediate clinical evaluation, counseling and insurance coverage processing.
This video is just one in an ongoing series of clinical updates produced by the Mountain West AETC (Project ECHO), which--like other regional AETCs--routinely delivers similar clinical updates. See also the AETC's National HIV Curriculum, a free online learning module on HIV care and treatment.
