We know there is a lot of information to share with your Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients before Open Enrollment! We have narrowed it down to three key messages.

1. The 2018 Open Enrollment Period runs from November 1 to December 15, 2017 in states using HealthCare.gov.

Clients in these states have six weeks to enroll in or renew a plan in those states. Plans joined during Open Enrollment start January 1, 2018.

2. For some states that do not use HealthCare.gov, Open Enrollment for 2018 health plans has been extended.

This year, as a transitional measure, the following states are extending the Open Enrollment Period with a Special Enrollment Period: CA, CO, CT, DC, MA, MN, NY, RI, and WA.

3. Clients should ask a case manager or enrollment assister to help them find a plan.

Encourage your clients to get help comparing plan options or finding out what plans are recommended by your state ADAP (or your local RWHAP insurance assistance program) to make sure they get the best plan for their needs.

4. Help clients actively compare plans to avoid getting auto-enrolled into a plan.

If a client does not log in and actively choose a plan, they will be automatically re-enrolled in their current plan on December 15 (the last day of Open Enrollment). If a client’s plan is not available for next year, they will be auto-enrolled into a different plan with a similar premium.

Plans can change, and people’s health needs can change too. Active enrollment could help clients discover new plans offered on the Marketplace that may be a better option for their health needs.
