Ryan White and World AIDS Day

November 12, 2013

December 1, 2013 is the 25th year for World AIDS Day under a theme that reflects the history and hopeful future of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. Let's break down this year's slogan: “Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation.”

First, the past.

The Ryan White program was signed into law in 1990, started operations in 1991, and ever since has been driven by the concept of working together.

  • Consumers work with clinicians and agencies to take an active part in their care and decision making.
  • Planning brings communities together to assess needs, set priorities, and implement services.
  • Provider agencies work together to develop common systems for managing data, enhancing quality, and adhering to high standards of care.
  • And Ryan White works with U.S. global HIV/AIDS programs under PEPFAR to share insights on effective ways plan and deliver care.

See A Living History on the HRSA HIV/AIDS Bureau's website to learn more about the decades-long work of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. See also the AIDS History Project from UCSF.

And the future?
