Quality Award Winners

A New Jersey program that improved viral load suppression, and a Puerto Rico initiative to that dramatically increased Pap smear compliance, are winners of the 2013 Ryan White Quality of Care Awards. The awards were announced by the HRSA-funded National Quality Center.

Award for Quality Improvement Activities

Ponce's Part A Transitional Grant Area (TGA) received its award for efforts that improved the Pap smear performance rate from roughly 50% to 72%. Improvements were driven by use of a PDSA cycle that lead to development of a quality improvement plan with patient education, staff training, hiring of a nurse to conduct screenings, and new services to process tests.

Award for Leadership in Quality

Patricia High of the Ocean County Health Department in New Jersey initiated a PDSA cycle that prompted expanded adherence counseling, better access to HIV medications via the Ryan White AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), and streamlined access to testing for STDs, hepatitis, and other conditions. The undetectableviral load rate, in particular, increased from 58% to a high of 88% over a 4-year period.
