Chart format description of models for safety net providers in adapting to the new payer and provider environment under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The following models are presented, with examples of Washington, DC-area agencies considering their adoption:

  • Electronic health records and billing systems that provide for full and efficient billing to multiple partners.
  • Favorable agreements with Medicaid MCOs, exchange providers, and other health insurers.
  • Joint EHR and billing systems.
  • Affiliation with an FQHC or look-alike.
  • Obtaining of patient-centered medical home (PCMH) status.
  • Specialization and excellence – particular hard-to-reach or serve population, particular services.
  • Participation in a “health home” or patient-centered medical home network or related model.
  • Obtaining of FQHC or FQHC look-alike status.
  • Transition to acceptance of thirdparty reimbursements.
